Peer To Peer

Downloading, or peer to peer has recieved a lot of bad press of late. However, here I will attempt explain to you the benefits of simple peer to peer sharing, and all the goodies that are available to you for Free on the Internet.

Firstly you should be aware that a lot of what is available is considered  Pirated material, and consequently frowned upon. An example of this would be, a new movie just released at the cinema, which could be available from some download sites.

The act of downloading a copy may well be illegal in your country of residence. Therefore, what you choose to do with the information I am sharing, is for you to decide. I will add that there are plenty of legal download sites, all you need to do is Google !

This is an example of Utorrent in action.

Setting Up -

The first step is to create a folder on your main drive, usually C:/. I recomend you call it Downloads, for obvious reasons.

Second step is to download the Bit Torrent client. There are many programmes to choose from, I currently use uTorrent, a very simple to set up client, it can be found for free at this link

DOWNLOAD uTORRENT

When the installation is completed ....open and select options/preferences

pref1

First go to directories and select the first white box.....browse to your new downloads folder..C/Downloads....and select

pref2

Repeat using the same folder for the next two...leave the last two blank.

Now select Bandwidth...first box type 15, third box 0, fourth box 200, next box 50 and next box 10.

pref3

Now select apply and then OK...now close.

You are now ready to download Bit Torrent files.

There are one or two other settings you will have to configure, these will include port forwarding, and this will vary dependent on what router you are using.

All these configurations are quite simple to follow, and they will help you to advance your understanding of computing.

Format.

In most cases the files you download will come in a recognisable format, i.e. mp3, for music or wma and avi, for movies. However, this is not always the case, so the following software would be an advantage to have on your hard drive.

7 Zip.......  This program will open any files you download in a zip format and is available for free from here

Magic Disc.....  This program will enable you to load and read any files that come down as an image file, and is available for free from here.

Audio

My main interest in peer to peer downloading is music. To this end I have made my PC my Hi-Fi, and have upgraded my sound card to a professional standard and purchased a high end speaker system.

Should you wish to do much the same, then my advice would be to download your music in the Flac format where possible. The quality is far superior to mp3, but the downside is, the files are about three times the size.

If you decide to stick to mp3, then do not download any files less than 320 kbps as the loss in sound quality is quite noticeable.

For replaying your music collection you can use Windows Media Player, usually included in the Windows XP system.

My preference is Foobar 2000, A very simple player that comes complete with all the codec's you will need to play your music in the Flac format.

Foobar 2000 ......... Is available to download for free from here

Important !

The principle of peer to peer file downloading is sharing, therefore it is important that after you have downloaded your chosen file, you leave the program open so that other people who are downloading can get the file from you. So if you always aim to upload 100% of what you have downloaded, then that is fine.

Bit Torrent Sites.

These are easily found by using Google. On most sites they like you to register to become a member, please note that registration is free, if you visit a site that asks for money, then go elsewhere. To get you started I will place some links below. These were all free when I last checked......So no need to register!

NB......... That's just my get out of jail card !
