Prince Charles Depressed About Lack of Action on Climate Change
Prince Charles admitted in an interview published Sunday that he found it "depressing" that his frequent warnings over climate change had not been heeded. The Prince of Wales added, though, that he was "delighted" that it seemed people had begun to realise that he had in fact been ringing the alarm over a serious issue and not "complete nonsense". "All I have been trying to do is remind people that we have to live and work in harmony with nature if we are to have any chance of surviving on this planet," Charles told the Sunday Telegraph in the Galapagos Islands at the end of a 10-day tour of South America. Asked if he was frustrated his warnings had not been taken seriously, he replied: "It is depressing. I am not doing this for myself but, as I keep saying, for everyone's children and our grandchildren."

The world's first climate change refugees
Within a few weeks a boat filled with wide-eyed children and tearful adults will pull out from a Pacific lagoon to escape the slow death of their island home. The group will become the world's first refugees from the effects of global warming, leaving behind a tiny speck of land that is being slowly swallowed by the rising ocean. Ironically, the Carteret Islanders have made what is possibly the smallest carbon footprint on the planet, yet they are the first to suffer the devastating effects of a wider, polluted world they know nothing about.
Such is the effect of rising seas that tidal surges have cut one of the small islands in the Carteret group - 1,000 miles north east of Australia- in half, the salt water slicing through the low centre. "We have struggled for more than 20 years to keep the sea back from our villages," says Mr Bernard Tunim from Piul, one of the islands in the group. "We've built sea walls, planted mangrove trees along the shore, but the storm surges and high tides just come in and wash everything away. "We've lost our simple houses, our vegetable gardens have been destroyed and our fresh water supplies in the ground have been contaminated. "For drinking all we can rely on now is rainwater and coconut juice, but even the coconut trees are dying. You can walk along the beach and see just the bottoms of dead trees sticking up through the sand."

British Police Are Criminalising Peaceful ProtestLast week Lib Dem MP David Howarth held a meeting in Westminster to present a highly disturbing and potentially explosive report on the way police in the UK are criminalising legitimate protest. The British Government justified the heavy-handed approach by revealing that 70 police officers had been injured policing the protest; but a freedom of information request revealed that these 'injuries to police' included such things as heatstroke, toothache and insect bites. Vernon Coaker, the Home Office minister who had made the claim about police injuries, was later forced to apolgise to the House and admit that "there were no recorded injuries to police officers sustained as a result of direct contact with the protestors R.I.P. - Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.

Britian shows signs of heading towards 1930's style depression
Areas of increased unemployment The country is displaying early symptoms of being trapped in a so-called “debt deflation trap” where families find themselves pushed further and further into the red every month, according to a Bank of England report published today, 16/03/09. The stark warning will cause serious concerns, since it was this combination of falling prices and soaring debt burdens that plagued the US in the 1930s. The bank is using it's Quarterly Bulletin to highlight the threat posed to the economy by deflation – where prices fall each year rather than rise. Although inflation is currently in positive territory, it is expected to become negative in the coming months. The Bank is worried that this may combine with high levels of indebtedness to squeeze families further.

Sita Sings the Blues is finally free! After years of wrangling, Nina Paley's acclaimed, brilliant short film, Sita Sings the Blues is finally available as a free, open-licensed downloads. Paley spent a shocking amount of time and money fighting over the copyrights to the 1920s jazz music that is integral to the film (some have likened it to Betty Boop in Bollywood, which is catchy, but fails to capture the fantasticness of the film), Paley's finally secured a license that allows her to distribute the whole movie, for free, forever, under a remix-friendly license.
